The Challenge: How to Remove Waste from a Remote, Environmentally Protected Island?

Brothers Island Lighthouse stands alone on a rugged outcrop in the Cook Strait, representing New Zealand’s only rock station. This iconic but challenging setting introduced several key logistical and environmental hurdles:
- Remote Access: The island is off-limits to the public and accessible only by sea or air. Unpredictable tides, strong currents, and rocky landings make transporting supplies — let alone large volumes of waste — particularly complex.
- Environmental Sensitivity: The island serves as a protected wildlife sanctuary, home to endangered species including the tuatara. Every aspect of the operation had to minimise environmental disruption and prevent contamination of the delicate ecosystem.
- Complex Lifting Requirements: With no safe landing area for vehicles, all waste had to be airlifted by helicopter from the island. This required robust, certified lifting solutions that offered full compliance and safety assurance.

Scope Group needed a safe, scalable way to remove an estimated 80m³ of waste from the island — with zero environmental impact and complete confidence in the lifting process.
Why Beacon Safety’s Hazibags — Certified for Complex, Critical Waste Lifting were the Solution?
To meet these challenges, Scope Group partnered with Beacon Safety to access a specialist solution: certified Hazibags. Designed for high-risk environments and approved for hazardous waste handling, Hazibags offered the reliability required for the unique lifting scenario.
